What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma consists of two elements: plasma, or the liquid portion of blood, and platelets, a type of blood cell that plays an important role in healing throughout the body. Platelets are well-known for their clotting abilities, but they also contain growth factors that can trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area. Platelet-rich plasma is simply blood that contains more platelets than normal.

To create platelet-rich plasma, clinicians take a blood sample from the patient and place it into a device called a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma.

What is PRP?

PRP contains everything the body needs to heal. Using modern technology, your doctor can harvest high concentrations of your body’s natural healing cells and inject them back into your skin. Once injected, the stem cells in PRP release growth factors, stimulating your body to increase collagen and elastin production. The result is a long-lasting youthful glow to your skin.

Where can PRP be used?

The most common area we use PRP is in your skin.  When combined with micro-needling, PRP will help the skin heal faster and give you longer-lasting results.  Most clients describe their skin as plump and having a radiant complexion.

PRP can also be used in the deeper skin layer to increase skin thickness and improve skin quality.  PRP is also used to inject into the scalp to help hair grow and joints after surgery or an injury.

PRP is derived from your own blood therefore it is a very low risk procedure.

Both Micro-Needling and PRP help stimulate collagen production.  Micro-needeling creates controlled micro-trauma to the superficial and deep skin layers forcing the body to heal.  Adding PRP to the skin after micro-needeling, helps recruit the important healing factors in  your body to improve the healing process, increasing collagen production, and stimulating elastin to grow.

PRP is natural and as a result is very safe.  However, PRP is not for everyone.  Depending on the condition you are trying to treat and your personal medical history, PRP may not be an option for you.  Make sure to discuss your aesthetic goals with your doctor to determine if PRP is right for you.

PRP is a part of your blood.  Your doctor will use a special collecting system  designed to protect the blood once it drawn.  Your blood is then placed in a special centrifuge designed to separate the blood into its three main layers.  Finally, your doctor will collect the PRP into syringes where it can be used in your treatment.
