Morpheus8 Pre & Post Care Instructions

One Week Prior to Treatment

  • Stop taking NSAID medicines such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen since they interfere with normal blood clotting. Check medication labels for the active ingredient.
  • You may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed for pain not to exceed 3000 mg a day.
  • Discontinue any irritant type of topical products or treatments products such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula), scrubs or anything perceived as ‘active’ skincare.
  • No prolonged sun exposure, to the area being treated. A treatment cannot be administered on sunburned skin.

Day of Treatment

  • Shower as usual.
  • Do not apply any lotion, powder, oils, or other products to treatment areas.
  • If face/neck is being treated, cleanse the area, and do not apply makeup.
  • If you have long hair, bring a hair band to pull it back.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

  • When you arrive, you will fill out your consent forms.
  • You will be taken to an exam room and have photographs taken.
  • Your skin will be cleaned, and topical anesthetic will be placed on the treatment area.
  • You will be asked to sit in a room/waiting room for 45-60 minutes to let the topical numbing medicine get you numb (We use a powerful numbing cream, but you must give it time to work). Much like traveling on an airplane, bring something to keep yourself occupied while you wait.  It is common for people to bring a book, a magazine, or headphones to listen a movie or music on your phone.  We can provide you with a wi-fi connection if needed.
  • In most cases, after 30 – 45 minutes, Dr. Simmons will come in and add extra numbing medication. This will be discussed prior to your procedure.
  • If you have opted to use Pro-Nox (our version of laughing gas), this will often be used while you are being numbed by Dr. Simmons (as well as during your procedure if needed).
  • Once you are numb; you will be placed into position for your procedure and get started.
  • Feel free to bring earbuds to wear during your procedure if noise and people talking makes you nervous.
  • After your procedure, your skin will be cleaned, cooled, an Aquaphor ointment will placed on the treated area.

What Can Be Expected After Your Treatment

  • Immediately after your treatment, you will look and feel like you have a moderate sunburn.
  • Your skin will feel warm and tighter than usual.
  • Your skin can be tender to touch in some areas.
  • The evening of your treatment, your skin will likely be warm and tender, and may look very red. See net/morpheus8treatment for examples.
  • If you had treatment around your eyes, it is very common to have bruising. The skin around the eyes is very thin with a lot of blood vessels.  The Morpheus8 pins frequently disrupt these vessels which causes bruises
  • Avoid taking hot showers or letting hot water run over the treated area. Your skin is very exposed and will be sensitive to temperature changes.

What To Use on Your Skin After Your Treatment

  • It is important to understand that Morpheus8 uses small pins to penetrate the skin and there will be small open holes in the treated area (you may not be able to see them, but they are there). It will take a few days for these holes to heal.  These holes create an opening for bacteria and dirt, so please do your best to keep your skin clean.
  • It is important to only use Aquaphor (or other approved topical products) the first few days after your treatment to avoid irritating the small holes. Using the wrong ointment/cream on your skin increases the chances of developing small bumps, chicken skin, rough skin, or irritated skin.
  • Use mild oil free cleansers to keep your skin clean.
  • You can shower if desired but avoid soaking in tubs, hot tubs, or pools to keep your skin from getting infected. Do not let hot water run directly over the treated area.  It will be very tender after your treatment.

The Few Days After Your Treatment

  • It is common for the few days after your treatment for your skin to feel tender, develop small bruises, and you may even form small scabs. Scabs are more common on the legs, abdomen, arms, and neck, but has been reported in the face as well.
  • Some patients report that their skin can peel for the first 3-7 days after your treatment. This is normal depending on your treatment. Use the Aquaphor if needed to keep the skin moist.
  • Most patients report the redness to be gone in 24 hours, but it is common for the redness to last 3-4 days, depending on the area treated. The body heals slower than the face so takes longer for the redness to go away.
  • Swelling is also common immediately after and can last a few days after your treatment. Like the redness, the swelling will also go down with a little time.
  • In a few cases, some small burns or scratches will be found. Do your best not to pick at the scabs to avoid scaring.  Apply Aquaphor as much as needed to keep the itching down to a minimum.  These small areas will heal within 10-14 days.
  • If the swelling, redness, or scabs are more than you were expecting, call Dr. Simmons for advice. It is rarely needed but Dr. Simmons may add topical steroids, oral steroids, or antibiotics depending on the situations.
  • Use a soothing cleanser or face wash with lukewarm water to cleanse the face and gently pat dry the treated skin until it heals. Always make sure that your hands are clean when touching the treated area.
  • HYDRATE – Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. This will help your skin heal faster.

Common Questions

  • MAKEUP – You can begin to use makeup 2 days after the treatment. We recommend oil free makeup and that you clean your makeup brushes prior to using. Remember, Morpheus8 makes small holes in your skin so you don’t want to add anything that will irritate the skin.
  • PROTECT – At 24 hours after the procedure, you should apply a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with a SPF30, AT ALL TIMES when you will be outside. Use a physical sunscreen (Zinc/Titanium Dioxide) daily.
    • Do not use chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate).  The top layers of skin that normally protect you from the sun have been removed by Morpheus8 making you more susceptible to sun burn and sun damage.  As a result, we recommend you reapply the sun block often.  In addition to reducing your future risk of skin cancer, sunscreens also reduce wrinkles and slow the aging process.

What to Avoid

To ensure the proper healing, be certain to observe the following:

  • For the first 48 hours post treatment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) or anything perceived as ‘active’ skincare.
  • Avoid intentional and direct sunlight for at least 48 hours. This includes tanning beds.
  • Do not go swimming for at least 48 hours post-treatment.
  • No exercising or strenuous activity for the first 48 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments are harmful, rife with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions.
